Director's Message
A Message to Oregon’s Anglers
As I wrap up my first year as Director of ODFW, I want to take a moment to thank you. One of the greatest privileges of this role has been meeting so many of you—anglers who care deeply about Oregon’s fish, waters, and the future of both. Your passion and dedication are inspiring. Whether you’re introducing kids to fish biology through our Eggs to Fry program, restoring habitat in your local watershed, or simply building a bench at your favorite fishing spot so others can enjoy the view—your efforts matter. They remind me every day why this work is so important.
As I write this message, I’m reflecting on the last time I was out fishing the Columbia River with my son, husband, and a close friend. Like many of you, I treasure those quiet moments on the water—where we slow down, reconnect, and remember what really matters.
Please know that our agency is committed to doing everything we can to protect and improve Oregon’s fisheries—for you, and for the generations that follow. From restoring habitat and removing barriers to expanding cold water refuges, we’re working with countless partners tribal governments, and volunteers to make progress. For the first time in more than a century, ODFW staff captured video of the first salmon swim above Keno Dam. And we’re getting closer to delisting coastal coho— thanks to decades of voluntary efforts, our fisheries on those stocks continue to improve.
Thanks to your support, we also secured a historic $20 million state investment in our hatcheries this year. It is going to be a significant lift to maintain the hatchery system given all the challenges facing it and this was a big first step.
We don’t take your trust for granted. Every day, we work to earn it by sustaining the fish you love and ensuring they’re here for the next generation.
Best,
Debbie Colbert, Director
