Each game land falls into one of five categories and is so designated in the individual game lands listings. A special hunting permit may be required for certain species in these areas. Applications can be submitted through the Go Outdoors North Carolina website. The five designations are as follows:
- Three-days-per-week areas (3): Game lands on which game may be taken during the open seasons and hunting is limited to Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. days when these holidays do not fall on a Sunday.
- Four-day-per-week areas (4): Game lands on which game may be taken during the open seasons and hunting is limited to Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. These areas are closed to hunting on other days of the week, unless specifically opened under the individual game lands listings.
- Six-day-per-week areas (6): Game lands on which game may be taken Monday through Saturday during the open seasons.
- Seven-day-per-week areas (7): Game lands on which game may be taken Monday through Sunday during the open seasons.
