ROUND GOBY WATCH

Round goby are small, predatory fish from central Eurasia that eat invertebrates, small fish, and fish eggs. They are voracious feeders and are a vector for fish and bird diseases, so they can devastate native fish populations and alter aquatic communities. Introduced to the Great Lakes through ballast water, they have made their way through the Erie Canal and Mohawk River to the Hudson River and can be transported to new waterbodies in bait buckets and water-holding compartments in watercraft.

Help prevent their spread:

  • Learn how to identify round goby.
  • Dispose of bait in trash cans and at disposal stations.
  • Dump water from bait buckets and live wells on dry land.
  • Clean and dry your equipment thoroughly before visiting other waterbodies.
  • Purchase bait from a dealer that sells only NYS-certified bait.

If you think you’ve caught a round goby:

  • DO NOT RELEASE IT.
  • Take pictures of it from different angles (including the underside), and freeze

it, then throw it in the trash after ID has been confirmed.

  • Email the photos, noting where it was caught (coordinates preferred), to [email protected].
