Moose Special Permits

NEW Possession, Transport, and Testing Rules:
If you hunt or salvage deer, elk, or moose in any WDFW management region where Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been detected, you must submit a sample of the animal for testing and adhere to new transport rules.

Significant changes are red.

NEW TRANSPORT RULES: Importation Rules for Region 1 and Out-of-State Hunters

If you hunt or salvage deer, elk, or moose within the 100 series GMUs in WDFW’s Region 1, there are rules (WAC 220-413-030) regulating how you can transport your harvest within the state.

These rules also apply to deer, elk, moose, or caribou harvested or salvaged outside of Washington. You cannot bring whole carcasses into Washington. For more information on transport rules, see the Chronic Wasting Disease page.

Application Submission Period: April 28–midnight on May 28, 2025

  • These hunts are for special permit holders only. See the Special Permit Application page for instructions on how to apply.
  • You may purchase and submit up to five moose permit applications; one permit application per hunt category, for which you qualify, as listed in the following tables.
  • Only one moose may be taken per hunter during the hunting season.
  • Hunting licenses for mountain goat, moose, or bighorn sheep do not have to be purchased unless you are selected for a special hunt permit. If selected, you must send a check or money order for the appropriate fee, to WDFW's Headquarters office by the deadline established by the Department (15 day minimum) or the permit will become void and will be offered to an alternate. You may also purchase using a credit card by calling (866) 246-9453.
  • Hunters with permits to harvest antlerless moose are requested to refrain from taking cows with calves in their immediate vicinity. Some moose cows in Washington do not produce calves in all years, or may have already lost them by hunting season. WDFW requests that hunters with antlerless moose permits attempt to harvest these animals.

Submission of Moose Incisor Tooth

Hunters who are drawn for a moose permit will be provided a postage-paid envelope. Successful hunters are required to pull an incisor tooth within 60 days of harvest and return it to WDFW in the postage-paid envelope in order to determine the age of harvested moose. This will not only allow a hunter to know the age of their trophy moose, but will assist WDFW in sustainably managing moose populations in Washington. Hunters who want to check the age of their harvested moose can visit the WDFW tooth lookup page. Results are typically available approximately 6 months after the hunting season.
