A Special Message from the Commissioner
“A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers but borrowed from his children.”
— John James Audubon
This quote from Audubon aligns well with the mission of the Fish and Wildlife Department. Every one of our 189 employees here strives to ensure the beauty, resilience and diversity of our natural world is conserved for future generations of Vermonters.
This effort, however, is not limited solely to biologists and other folks who work for our department but includes all of you. The role of hunters, anglers and trappers as conservationists must not be overlooked. You are part of the cooperation that is necessary to sustain the natural balance and harmony.
As Commissioner, I remind you that you are the original conservationists. I encourage you to enjoy the woodlands, grasslands, rivers and streams. But most important, I need you to ensure that they remain a natural resource for those who venture out to enjoy the best of Vermont for years to come.
Christopher Herrick, Commissioner
