Director's Message

As I wrap up my first year as Director of ODFW, I want to thank you. Meeting so many of you—at meetings, over coffee and in the field—has been one of the best parts of the job. Your passion for hunting and wildlife is inspiring, and I’ve been proud to roll up my sleeves and work alongside you.

Big changes are coming to Eastern Oregon deer hunting in 2026 and you’ll see a lot of yellow highlights in this book. I know change isn’t always easy, but I’m excited about where we’re headed, toward a mule deer hunting season structure that’s grounded in the best available science.

Here’s what’s new: Beginning this year we are moving from wildlife management units (WMU) to deer hunt areas in Eastern Oregon. The new mule deer hunt areas are based on our research with GPS-collared deer and more accurately reflect real deer behavior, including both their summer and winter range.

This better science means better decisions to manage this iconic species. Hunt changes will improve monitoring and harvest management of mule deer and help us better understand what’s working as we implement herd-specific recommendations from the Plan.

Your support is essential to making this happen and I truly appreciate it. These changes reflect how we manage wildlife in Oregon—grounded in science, responsive to changing conditions, and centered on collaboration with the people who care most. Whether it’s mule deer, elk, or upland birds, our goal is the same: healthy wildlife populations and sustainable opportunities for all Oregonians. Thank you for being a vital part of that work.
