Attention youth Hunters: Extended Western Oregon Deer Season

To increase youth hunting opportunity, the Western Oregon general buck deer Any Legal Weapon season is extended two days for youth 12-17 years of age. Youth hunters with an unfilled General Any Legal Weapon Western Oregon deer tag or an unfilled W. High Cascade (119A) controlled hunt tag may hunt the area of the Western Oregon General Buck Deer season Nov. 7-8, 2026. This opportunity is not available to Mentored Youth Hunt Program participants as each youth hunter must have their own tag to participate. The tag sale deadline is Oct. 2, 2026. Bag limit: One buck with visible antler.

Drought, Fire, and Hunting

  • Hunters should be aware of drought conditions and risk of fire in their hunting units
  • ODFW will not close hunting seasons due to drought or fire
  • Landowners/managers control access, so check on access and road closure information in advance
  • If all access to a hunt unit is closed due to fire restrictions and ODFW determines hunters lost their opportunity to hunt, ODFW will evaluate the situation after the season(s) close
  • If ODFW determines compensation for lost access is warranted, ODFW will notify the affected hunters of their options
  • For additional drought information, visit the Impact of Drought on Fish and Wildlife page.

Chronic Wasting Disease

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal disease infecting deer and elk across North America. Animals with CWD can be infected (and spread the disease) for several years before showing any symptoms. Testing will help detect CWD early and allow ODFW to slow its spread. There are four easy ways that you can test your animal for CWD: (1) make an appointment at an ODFW field office, (2) utilize drop barrels at specific locations, (3) visit a participating taxidermist or meat processor, or (4) stop at check stations. Get your animals tested and educate yourself and others about CWD. For more information on CWD, how to get your animal tested, and how to view results, please visit the MyODFW CWD page.

  • Beginning with the 2026 seasons, ODFW is using new Deer Hunt Areas across all of eastern Oregon.
  • Find your new hunt area by scanning the QR code or visiting the Eastern Oregon Deer Hunts page.

  • All Eastern Oregon controlled deer hunts will have new hunt numbers and names identifying hunts within herd ranges.

Columbian White-tailed Deer

Side-by-side comparison of a Columbian white-tailed deer and a black-tailed deer. The white-tailed deer has antlers that grow from a single main beam, a brown tail, and a small metatarsal gland about one inch long. The black-tailed deer has antlers that typically branch twice, a black tail, and a larger metatarsal gland about three inches long.
Comparison chart showing key differences between Columbian white-tailed deer and black-tailed deer, including antler shape, tail color, and metatarsal gland size.

Columbian white-tailed deer (CWTD) occur in two western Oregon populations. The lower Columbia Rvr population in and around Julia Butler Hansen Wildlife Refuge is protected under the Endangered Species Act and is not hunted. The Umpqua Basin near Roseburg was removed from the federal Endangered Species list in 2003 and has a huntable population size. CWTD are hunted around Roseburg using controlled hunts. CWTD can only be taken in hunts specifically listing CWTD in the bag limit.

Hunters in the Roseburg area are responsible for distinguishing CWTD from black-tailed deer. For tips on field identification of Columbian white-tailed deer versus black-tailed deer, see the video on the ODFW Deer Species page.

Additional Regulations

  • Any legal weapon may be used unless otherwise noted in a hunt.
  • White-tailed deer are illegal to harvest in all Western Oregon units except controlled hunts in the Melrose Unit (#23) that specifically list white-tailed deer in the bag limit.
