To hunt in the NAS portions of Unit 181, the tagholder is required to attend a NAS hunter safety briefing. Mature ram numbers and distribution are unknown in this unit. * Portions of Hunt Units 280, 281, and 282 are within the Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) where public access is restricted. Hunters and everyone in their respective hunting parties, must comply with all Nevada hunting requirements and all NTTR safety and security requirements including the following: 1) consent to and pass a criminal history background check, 2) be at least 14 years old on opening day of the respective hunting season, 3) attend the Nellis Air Force Base hunter safety briefing, and 4) within the NTTR Hunt Units 280, 281, and 282 limit party size to 5 including tagholder. Additional party members may complete background check and safety briefing, but only maximum of 5 party members including tagholder may be present within the NTTR Hunt Units 280, 281, and 282 at any given time. *** Hunters and members of their parties who fail to comply with these requirements may be denied access to the NTTR. Hunters and members of their parties may not access the NTTR after a tag is filled and animal has been removed and in possession of tagholder. No pets are allowed on NTTR. It is the hunter’s responsibility to meet and/or comply with all NTTR eligibility requirements. In some units there may be adjustments to season dates to accommodate Department of Defense operations. The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners hereby delegates authority to the Nevada Department of Wildlife to adjust season dates to accommodate Department of Defense operations so long as there is no change to the overall length of the season.

Nevada Test and Training Range Bighorn Hunts

The Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) is comanaged by the United States Air Force (USAF) under the Department of Defense (DOD) and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) – Desert National Wildlife Refuge (DNWR). This area offers a unique experience for desert bighorn sheep hunters who are lucky enough to draw a tag in one of the Hunt Units within the NTTR (i.e., Hunt Units 280, 281 and 282). Since the inception of the NTTR in 1940, these lands have remained relatively undisturbed allowing bighorn sheep to persist through time along with the native Mojave Desert ecosystem that supports sensitive plants and other wildlife species.

The privilege of drawing a tag and being able to hunt on the NTTR/DNWR comes with heightened responsibilities that should not be taken lightly. Hunters and their party members are required to pass a criminal background check, submit a full inventory of their equipment/vehicles and take part in a mandatory safety briefing prior to accessing the NTTR/DNWR. The actions of hunters and their hunting party today have ramifications for the future and participants in this hunt. Hunters are urged to be responsible and to follow on rules and restrictions on the NTTR/DNWR so that others can enjoy this experience as well. Please take this process and the privilege to hunt on these lands seriously.

Mandatory Bighorn Ewe and Mountain Goat Identification Course

Hunters who draw either a bighorn sheep ewe tag or a mountain goat tag must complete a mandatory sheep or goat sex identification course prior to receiving their tags These hunters will receive an email with course details.
