Health Advisory and Fish Eating Guidelines
Most fish are healthy to eat and are a great source of protein, healthy fats (Omega-3s), and important vitamins, but any fish (store-bought or sport-caught) could have contaminants such as mercury and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) that can harm human health—especially children and fetuses. The MinnesotaDepartment of Health lets people know how often fish can be safely eaten.

Tips for safe fish eating
- For consumption advice on individual waters that have been tested visit mndnr.gov/lakefind.
- Older and larger predator fish (walleyes, northern pike, lake trout) contain more mercury—eat smaller predators.
- Eat more panfish (sunfish, crappies) and fewer fish that eat other fish (walleyes, northern pike, lake trout).
- PCBs accumulate the most in fatty fishes such as carp, catfish, and lake trout.
