An Introduction to Deer Processing

Acquiring food is one of the most common reasons Hoosiers hunt. The sport offers the ability to take full responsibility for where your food comes from, how it’s harvested, and how it’s handled and cared for.

Processing a deer at home can feel intimidating, but with the right tools, ample space to work, and some patience, it can become an enjoyable part of your hunting experience. Home processing allows hunters to choose their preferred cuts of meat, preservation methods such as freezing or canning, and packaging size. For a complete deer processing guide, including a detailed equipment list, step-by-step instructions, and instructional videos, visit the Indiana DNR Deer Processing page.

Whether you’re exploring the idea of processing your harvest for the first time or looking for resources on how to improve your processing skills, DNR is here to help. We’re partnering with Purdue Extension and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to offer deer processing workshops that cover both beginner and advanced techniques. Find a Learn to Hunt workshop near you by visiting the Indiana DNR Learn to Hunt page.
