Grouse Hunting Survey
West Nile Virus (WNV) may be impacting ruffed grouse populations in Virginia. WNV has been found to cause mortality in both young and adult birds, but the virus is particularly harmful to young grouse. PA recently found WNV in their grouse populations. Through the collection and testing of blood samples we can detect if grouse have survived the virus. The Department is asking grouse hunters to help search for WNV by collecting a small amount of blood from grouse they kill. If you are interested in participating in the survey, the Department will send you the materials to collect a small drop of blood. Please contact Gary Norman at email@example.com or by calling 540-569-0822 if you are interested in the survey. Hunters will be reimbursed $25 for each bird they collect to pay for their time and effort to collect and return the samples.
