2010 was another successful year for DEC’s fish hatchery system, with more than 825,000 pounds of fish produced and stocked into approximately 1,200 public waters. The number of fish stocked between January 1 and December 31, 2010 can be found in the table below. The majority of fish stocked are to enhance recreational fishing opportunities, although some are stocked to restore native species to waters they formally inhabited. Samples of fish from each DEC hatchery are inspected annually prior to stocking by DEC’s Rome Lab to ensure the fish are free of serious diseases.
