Maryland Wildlife and Heritage Service—Revenues

The majority of the funding for Maryland’s Wildlife & Heritage Service comes from hunting licenses and fees (50%) and federal funds such as Wildlife Restoration (26%) which are derived from an excise tax on sporting arms and ammunition. WHS meets its mission of conserving Maryland’s diverse native wildlife, plants, and the natural communities that support them. Although hunting related revenues provide the majority of WHS’ funding source, we are able to ensure operation of a variety of programs within the agency. The following chart summarizes WHS’ expenditures by program for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2010.
