Message from the Secretary

Brought to you by:

Secretary of the Maryland DNR

Joseph-P-Gill-photo_opt.png

It is my pleasure to introduce this edition of the annual Guide to Hunting and Trapping as the newest Secretary of Maryland DNR. In my tenure as Deputy Secretary we have enjoyed great success in advancing the opportunities for hunters and trappers to enjoy the marsh, forests and fields across Maryland’s extraordinary landscape.

In my new role, I plan to continue supporting those opportunities while identifying strategies to expand the number of new hunters who join the ranks of our country’s original conservationists. I will also charge our staff with finding opportunities to retain our senior hunters while adding more women and minorities to the hunting fraternity.

Recruitment and retention of youth, senior, minority and female hunters is a priority for DNR and I ask that you join us in that effort. Start this year by taking advantage of one of the many new and expanded junior hunting days or encouraging a friend to attend a Becoming an Outdoor Woman program.

In addition, you can look forward to a greater emphasis on habitat management, creation and restoration from the team at DNR. I have a firm personal belief that habitat is the key to sustaining wildlife populations—especially game species. I will be tasking our forest, park and wildlife managers to fix their focus on our public land wildlife habitats while amplifying our efforts with willing private land partners.

Finally, let us know how we can help you help others connect with the natural world through hunting and trapping. We are here to help and welcome your input. I am looking forward to serving you as the new Secretary of DNR and hope to have the opportunity to meet many of you in my new role in the future.

My personal best wishes to you and your companions as you head outdoors this season!

Sincerely,

Joseph-P-Gill-signature_opt.png

Joseph P. Gill,

Secretary of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources
