Message from the Governor

Over the past several years the O’Malley-Brown Administration has worked with Maryland hunters to expand opportunities for days afield and encourage the uninitiated to engage in this time-honored tradition. Together we have adopted regulations to provide more activities for junior hunters, overseen an increase of nearly 20,000 acres of new public hunting lands across Maryland, and directed more than $750,000 to promote our State’s vast hunting opportunities and help you share your harvest with citizens in need. Most recently, during the 2013 General Assembly, we were able to increase Sunday hunting opportunities in several counties.

Maryland’s commitment to the North American model of wildlife management is unparalleled. Sound science, comprehensive risk-averse management strategies and appropriate enforcement are the keys to that model. The results are regulations that allow you and your family to enjoy time afield and put food on the table without threatening our diverse game populations.

A few months ago, I joined a team of DNR wildlife professionals in the field to see their work in action and it was a remarkable learning experience. The biologists and technicians carried out their responsibilities with precision and expertise. The experience reaffirmed that Maryland’s natural and living resources are in the very best of hands, and further fortified my commitment to sustainable wildlife management.

This scientific approach to wildlife management, along with your continued commitment to stewardship and conservation, will ensure the great tradition of hunting remains part of the fabric of our outdoor experience for generations to come.

Sincerely,
