Take a Child Fishing
To “catch a fish” is one of the Maryland Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights, issued by Governor Martin O’Malley in April 2009 as part of the Maryland Partnership for Children in Nature, an initiative to ensure all Maryland young people have the opportunity to connect with their natural world and grow to become informed and responsible stewards.
The Maryland My First Fish Program recognizes an angler that catches his or her first fish in Maryland. A special certificate will be awarded to the angler for this first fish. My first fish anglers under the age of 16 will automatically be enrolled in the Maryland Youth Fishing Club, sponsored by Maryland DNR — www.dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/keepfishing.
Youth fishing rodeos are a great way to introduce a child to fishing – even if you have never been fishing yourself. Fishing rodeos are typically held at small ponds or lakes and are aimed at helping beginners successfully catch a fish. For information on youth rodeos in your area go to www.dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/keepfishing.
