1 Big Game License: Required of all deer, turkey and bobcat hunters in addition to Basic Season License.

2 LA Sportsman’s Paradise License: Includes Basic and Saltwater Fishing, Basic Season and Big Game Hunting, Bow, Primitive Firearms, Turkey, LA Duck, WMA Hunting Permit and all Recreational Gear licenses (EXCEPT recreational trawls greater than 16 feet in length – additional license required).

3 Louisiana Wild Turkey: Required of all turkey hunters in addition to Basic Season and Big Game licenses.

4 Harvest Information Program (HIP): Licensed hunters of migratory game birds (doves, ducks, geese, woodcock, rails, snipe, coots or gallinules) in Louisiana must be HIP certified in addition to all other requirements.

5 Senior Hunt/Fish License: Any resident who reached age 60 on June 1, 2000 or later must obtain a Senior Hunt/Fish License to hunt or fish. This license is in lieu of Basic and Saltwater Fishing, Basic Hunting, Big Game, Bow, Primitive Firearms, LA Duck License, Turkey Stamp and WMA Hunting Permit. It does not include special gear such as trawls, crab traps, crawfish traps, hoop nets, etc.

6 WMA Hunting Permit: Required of anyone (age 18-59) who hunts on any land administered by LDWF, including wildlife refuges and wildlife management and habitat conservation areas.

7 These licenses are all inclusive. No other license or WMA hunting permit is required.

8 An original OR certified copy of an original birth certificate required at time of purchase, along with an official picture ID. Note: Purchase available via internet provided an original or certified copy of the customer’s birth certificate and driver’s license is on file with LDWF.

Lifetime hunting licenses include basic hunting, big game hunting, primitive firearms, bow hunting, state waterfowl license, turkey license and WMA hunting permit.

Lifetime licenses are available from the Baton Rouge office only. Allow three weeks processing time. Applicants are required to have lived in Louisiana for the immediate six months prior to making application to qualify for resident rates. Mandatory documents required with application for applicants under 18 are a birth certificate and a copy of both parents’ drivers licenses. Mandatory documents required with application for anyone 18 and older are a valid LA driver’s license issued a minimum of six months and one of the following:

  1. Louisiana voter’s registration card
  2. Louisiana vehicle registration or
  3. Two previous year’s state tax filing, stamped by Department of Revenue and Taxation.(Applications available at or by calling 225-765-2887)

Hunting and recreational fishing licenses may be purchased by phone toll-free at 1-888-765-2602 (an authorization number for immediate use will be provided and licenses will be mailed to each licensee) OR an E-license may be purchased at and printed using your home printer for immediate use. Methods of payment are Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, or E-check. A convenience fee is assessed. Customers wanting a license on durable, waterproof paper can still visit any license vendors.

License Exceptions & Exemptions

The following recreational fishermen and hunters are not required to obtain a basic recreational fishing license, saltwater license, basic hunting license, big game license or migratory waterfowl conservation license, but must have proof of age in their possession whenever fishing or hunting:

  1. Residents who were born prior to June 1, 1940.
  2. Residents and non-residents younger than 16 years of age.


Military licenses are valid only during that time when the licensee is on active duty in the armed forces of the United States.

Any resident or nonresident who possesses a military identification card that signifies that he or she is currently on active duty with any branch of the armed forces of the United States, including the National Guard, or the spouse or dependent of such person, may be issued a license for hunting or recreational fishing in Louisiana for the same fee as that required of Louisiana residents. The military identification card or dependent card and the appropriate license must be on the licensee’s person at all times when he is engaged in hunting and fishing activities.

Any Louisiana resident who submits proof of his or her status as an active member of the Louisiana National Guard or any reserve component of the United States armed forces, though not currently on active duty, may purchase in lieu of Basic and Saltwater Fishing, Basic Hunting, Big Game, Bow, Primitive Firearms, LA. Duck, Turkey Stamp and WMA Hunting Permit, a license for $50.00 to fish and hunt in Louisiana. Submit completed application with a copy of the applicant’s:

  1. Louisiana Driver’s license,
  2. Military identification card,
  3. Original letter from their commanding officer verifying that they are in “good standing” with the Louisiana National Guard or United States Armed Forces and
  4. Money order for $50.00. Mail to: Sports License, LDWF, P.O. Box 98000, Baton Rouge, LA 70898. The application form is available online at or at 225-765-2887.

    Resident veterans having a permanent service-connected disability classification of 50 percent or more and residents who are blind, paraplegic or multiple amputee shall upon identification and proof of disability satisfactory to LDWF, be issued sports hunting license without the payment of any fees thereof. Social Security, RailRoad, State and Public Subdivision Disability Retirement Recipients

A resident who is totally and permanently disabled and receiving a disability social security benefit may submit a current award letter from Social Security (SSI does not qualify) and a valid Louisiana driver’s license to qualify. A resident who receives disability retirement income from a retirement system whose members are exempt from federal social security, either pursuant to the Railroad Retirement Insurance Act, 45 U.S.C. 231, or because they are employees of a state or a political subdivision of the state that has not voluntarily agreed to participate in federal social security under 42 U.S.C. 418, may qualify to purchase a Resident Basic Hunting (includes WMA hunting permit), Resident Big Game Hunting, Resident Primitive Firearm, and a Resident Bow license at a fee of $5 each. Bona Fide Resident

Any person who has resided in this state continuously during the 6 months immediately prior to the date on which he or she applies for any license and who has manifested his or her intent to remain in this state by establishing Louisiana as his or her legal domicile, as demonstrated by compliance with all of the following, as applicable:

  • If registered to vote, he or she is registered to vote in Louisiana.
  • If licensed to drive a motor vehicle, he or she is in possession of a valid Louisiana drivers license.
  • If owning a motor vehicle located within Louisiana, he or she is in possession of a valid Louisiana registration for that vehicle.
  • If earning an income, he or she has filed a Louisiana state income tax return and has complied with state income tax laws and regulations.
