The following areas are open to public hunting. The key to the left specifies what type of hunting is permitted. Lottery deer hunting areas are listed elsewhere in this guide. Special tags, stamps, and permits are needed when hunting some species. Consult season descriptions for the species you are hunting. Consult firearms restrictions. Maps for many of these areas are available on the DEP’s website (www.ct.gov/dep).

Access Descriptions & Special Conditions
Barn Island WMA: Six miles from Mystic center on Rte 1 toward Westerly, RI, turn at head of Wequetequock Cove, bear right to Sound.
Bartlett Brook WMA: Access off Goshen Hill Road, southeast of Rte. 16.
Bear Hill WMA: Access by Bishop Rd. off Rte. 163. Specially designed trails for the physically disabled.
Quinebaug River WMA (Aspinook Pond): Parcel off Butts Bridge Road south of the powerlines is open to bowhunting only.
Spignesi WMA: East and west of Rte. 97, north of Rte. 14. Includes 153 acres of private land under public hunting easement.
Rose Hill WMA: East of Rte. 117, south of Rte. 2 to Thomas Road. No target or trap shooting.
Natchaug State Forest: 143 acre parcel in North Windham is closed to all firearms hunting and is designated as a Deer Bowhunting Only area.
Nehantic State Forest: Some sections are closed to all firearms hunting. These sections have been designated as Deer Bowhunting Only areas.
Pachaug State Forest: Parcel between Rte. 49 and Rte. 165 is closed to all firearms hunting and is a designated deer bowhunting only area. Other sections posted as no firearms hunting are also considered designated deer bowhunting only areas.
Harkness Memorial State Park: A portion of the park north of Rte. 213 (former Verkade property) is designated as a Deer Bowhunting Only area. Special access permits are required. Inquire at Park Manager’s Office.
Mansfield State-Leased Field Trial Area: Access via Old Windham Road, North Windham side. Shooting and non-shooting field trial area.
Sugarbrook Field Trial Area: Located 2 miles east of Rte. 14/Rte. 14A junction. Shooting and non-shooting field trial area.
Lebanon Cooperative Management Area: Hunting only in area located south of Old Rte. 2 (Norwich Ave.). Area owned by the Dept. of Agriculture and leased for farming.
Woodstock Landowners Permit-Required Area: Rte. 171 from West to South Woodstock and Rte. 169 from South to North Woodstock.
Yale Forest Permit-Required Area: Area open from September 1 through February 28 for small game, waterfowl and turkey hunting by seasonal access permit. Parking passes are also required. See vendor for details.
