Hunting & Fishing Appreciation Day

Brought to you by:

A day to celebrate the contributions of hunters and anglers to the conservation of Connecticut’s natural resources.

Join us in September 2011!

A certified range safety officer helps a youngster as he takes aim at a target with a .22 rifle. It was the first time many of the youngsters ever had a chance to fire a rifle.

In September 2010, the DEP and Friends of Sessions Woods cosponsored Connecticut’s first Hunting & Fishing Appreciation Day at the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington. This first-time event was a huge success as approximately 1,000 people, mostly families, attended.

There were activities for all ages, along with target shooting, 3-D archery, casting pools, field dog demonstrations, and interesting programs and workshops about hunting and fishing. The Congress of Rough Riders of Naugatuck provided scheduled demonstrations of Cowboy Action Shooting.

Attendees had the opportunity to speak face-to-face with DEP staff from the Divisions of Wildlife, Inland and Marine Fisheries, Law Enforcement, Boating, and Forestry, as well as with representatives from over 30 conservation, hunting, and fishing organizations. Attendees age 16 and older were able to enter a drawing for door prizes, including a kayak, shotgun, and fly-rod.

Children participated in several fun activities and crafts, such as track making, face painting, a blindfolded ropes course, and a scavenger hunt. Those who completed the scavenger hunt received a bird identification book and were automatically entered into a drawing for a backyard wildlife gift package.

Because such a good time was had by all, the Friends of Sessions Woods and the DEP decided to repeat the event this year. It will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington. Visit www.ct.gov/dep/HuntFishDay for more information.

Financial support for the 2010 Connecticut Hunting & Fishing Appreciation Day was provided by the Friends of Sessions Woods, the Main Street Community Foundation, and the Clinton S. Roberts Foundation.
